The Meriden Arts Council (MAC) held its annual awards event for the Educational Arts Awards and the Artist of the Year Award at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
A gathering of over forty friends, family and colleagues were on hand to celebrate the Arts winners and their accomplishments. Past Artist of the Year and Educational award winners were also included in the event. Mayor Mark Benigni presented City’s Citations of Honor to all awardees. Meriden Arts Council President, Staci Roy presented checks and certificates to all the educational award winners as well as presenting Artist of the Year award with MAC Vice-President Nancy Whitcher. The refreshments for the evening’s celebration were provided by the members of the Sweet Potato Society.
Mr. Mario Cavallo was selected by the awards committee of the Council to receive the Artist of the Year Award for his literary contributions and published poetry, his educational service of
35 years of service as an English teacher and Dept Chair at Maloney High School and his administrative service as treasurer and Board member of the Meriden Arts Council, current President of the Poetry Society, longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Rosa Ponzelle Society and a fourteen year member of the Friends of the Library Café staff.. Guests for the evening included former students of Mr. Cavallo’s, members of the Poetry Society, and members of the Friends of the Library.
The 2008 Arts Education Award winners were three Maloney High School graduating seniors whose list of accomplishments in the various arts disciplines, arts awards and accolades were extraordinary. The 2008 Meriden Arts Council Educational Award winners were Alexander Malanych who won for his literary excellence will be attending The University of Vermont for music performance and composition, Kristen Prescott-Ezickson who won for her excellence in visual art / theater design will be attending Towsan University for theatre design and production and Eric Zeiser who won for his excellence in performance / music will be attending Western Connecticut State University for trumpet and jazz performance.
